Croatia trusts Josipović
The Social Democrat Ivo Josipović has been elected Croatia's new president. In a run-off vote Josipović beat his rival Milan Bandić to become the third Croat head of state since 1991. Josipović has convinced his country he is the right man for the job, the Tageszeitung writes: "No one would have believed that the law professor would win with 60 percent of the vote. Ivo Josipović, a calm Social Democrat who favours argumentative discourse, is not the tribune, the daredevil, the witty expert politician his predecessor Stipe Mesic was. But his simple message promoting justice, the rule of law and the integration of Croatia into the European Union still struck a chord with the people. Above all in the big cities the people took him up on his promise that he is a man of integrity who can be successful in the fight against corruption."
