Criticism of Băsescu's promises to Moldova
Romania's head of state Traian Băsescu has promised the Moldovans that Romania will do everything in its power to bring their country into the EU. The daily România Liberă analyses Băsescu's announcement: "The president doesn't know exactly how he is going to bring more democracy to this periphery, more justice and more money. But he believes that the Romanian officials in Brussels can hit the table with their fists every now and then to demand more European money and favours for the brothers beyond the Pruth [the river which forms the border between Romania and the Republic of Moldova]. Traian Băsescu talks of the reinvention of the Republic of Moldova and Romania within the European Union, but in Moscow and Kiev all these declarations of love are viewed with suspicion. Traian Băsescu thinks Russia owes him something, while Russia is convinced its security area is shrinking with each year that passes. … Bucharest could enter an alliance with Chişinău by inviting Moscow to join the talks, because never in its entire history has Romania been able to ignore Russia."
