A security council seat for Switzerland?

Micheline Calmy-Rey, Switzerland's foreign minister, came out, on Monday August 21, in favour of the idea of Switzerland applying for a seat on the UN Security Council. Jean-Noël Cunod approves of the initiative. "Switzerland's possible candidacy to the security council would provide an opportunity to take another look at this old moon whose faded luster still holds charm for those nostalgic for oil lamps. Because, let's be clear, Switzerland cannot sit on the security council and remain neutral at the same time. ... It is therefore time to fix a date and penetrate this global arena that the Swiss have long regarded from afar, even haughtily. Due to our prosperity, which was once made possible in part by neutrality, we are afraid of taking the plunge into the tumultuous waters of globalisation. But we have already taken the dive into these waters. So we may as well swim."
