Angry Russians protest in vain

On the country's so-called Day of Anger thousands of people took to the streets in a number of Russian cities to protest against the government's economic policy and for more political freedom, calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. But their demonstrations won't bring about any changes, writes the left-liberal daily La Repubblica: "On the contrary, the regime promises to last for a long time yet. Its diarchy, the double rule [of Putin and Medvedev] is not on the verge of collapse. ... There are even clear indications that it is becoming more entrenched in power. ... The role play, even in the event that the changes in the two leading posts under consideration for the 2012 presidential elections do take place, is a fact and allows us to draw only one conclusion: the diarchy is a clever strategy and is being handled with great cunning. It will be of long duration."
