Mário Soares calls for a United States of Europe
Only the founding of a European Federation can save the EU from disintegration, writes Portugal's former president Mário Soares in the daily Diário de Notícias: "If European politicians don't realise that the EU, paralysed and lacking a comprehensive vision for its future - a vision common to all member states - must change to overcome this crisis there is the risk that it will fall apart. ... The foundation of an EU Fund to help crisis-stricken countries - or better still: a common European economic government - is a useful measure in the medium term. But it won't go far enough for the EU to truly develop. The EU must identify itself as a solid political unit. It must have a common political government, or in other words it must found a federal Europe, the United States of Europe of which the EU's founding fathers dreamed."
