Lega Nord leads the way in Italy
Italian head of government Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right camp made surprising headway in the regional elections, wresting four regions from the left-wing parties. According to business paper Il Sole 24 Ore this was all down to the right-wing populist Lega Nord party: "The rivalry between the Lega Nord and Berlusconi's party has borne fruit. [Lega Nord boss Umberto] Bossi is stronger than ever in the Alpine region which stretches from Veneto to Piedmont. ... One thing's for sure, the ruling majority has undergone a minor transformation since yesterday evening. Berlusconi, who has once again proven his ability to perform a balancing act with the vices and the virtues of his country, remains in power. But Bossi is now more than a coalition partner. Now more than ever he has the keys to the North in his hand. Everyone will have to come to terms with him, starting with Berlusconi."
