Recognising the faithful as partners for dialogue

The Church is making the mistake of treating the community like an anonymous mass rather than a dialogue partner, writes the leftist daily Il Fatto Quotidiano: "There is no sign of a resurrection on the horizon yet. On the contrary, the sky is growing darker and darker. This is a frightening ordeal for the Catholic Church. ... The Pope is acting in monastic and imperial isolation. ... Above all the idea that the religious community is made up not just of observers, people to be addressed with speeches, encyclicals and sermons, but active partners for dialogue who ask questions and demand answers seems totally alien to him. Pope Ratzinger, who thinks more clearly than many of his defenders, should not allow himself to be dominated by Professor Ratzinger and his tendency to adopt an abstract approach to problems and believe that one imperious intervention is enough."
