Sarkozy's monarchic media machine

The weekly newspaper Journal du Dimange has filed charges against those who may be responsible for spreading rumours that French President Nicolas Sarkozy's marriage is on the rocks. The left-wing daily Libération holds Sarkozy's entourage responsible for this reaction, which it writes is exaggerated: "The rumours that have been circulating on the president's private life are founded on nothing more than a chimera published in a blog and spread by part of the European press in the most fanciful manner. Now the Elysée itself, the target of the rumours, has once more got the machine running with the very authoritative voice of Nicolas Sarkozy's lawyer and that of one of his most important communication advisors. The rumours, they suggest, are part of a manoeuvre, a sort of obscure plot aimed at weakening the president. Even if there really were a plot, this affair about a rumour shows that political morals have hardly progressed since the libel cases that flourished in the days of the monarchy."
