Bulgarian prime minister untrustworthy
The Bulgarian Finance Minister Simeon Djankov has admitted that Bulgaria's budget deficit currently lies at 3.7 percent, and not 1.9 percent of the country's GDP. The reason is allegedly 'hidden contracts' awarded by the government that was voted out of office in mid-2009. The left liberal daily Süddeutsche Zeitung is dubious about the allegations against the former government: "A balanced judgement will only be possible after a detailed investigation has been carried out by the prosecution and the civic associations. Prime Minister Borisov's polpulist talent for casting himself in the role of the avenger of the disenfranchised is hardly believable. He will only be worthy of our trust when the misdeeds have been dealt with in court and the culprits condemned, and when Borisov starts dealing with the criminals in his own ranks just as mercilessly as he does with those in the opposing camp."
