João César das Neves on unjustified criticism of the Church
For centuries the Catholic Church has been unfairly criticised, writes the staunchly Catholic professor João César das Neves in the Diário de Notícias, arguing that mankind is simply projecting its social problems on to the Catholic Church: "One of the most astounding phenomena in the history of mankind is the attacks on the Church. This process, which is once again manifest now, is always peculiar, both because of its duration and because of the perseverance with which the Church is attacked. For 2,000 years the followers of Jesus have been persecuted ... . The Church is the only institution that is held responsible for things that happened 100, 500 or 1,500 years ago. ... At present we are dealing with an even more bizarre charge: The Church is being accused of paedophilia. ... Yet history shows that no other institution has done more to ... balance sexuality and morals in people's private lives. ... The attacks against the Church are a constant in history. History changes. The Church remains constant."
