Governing party must demonstrate responsibility
Bronisław Komorowski, the acting president of Poland, and his party, the governing conservative Civic Platform (PO) now command enormous power and therefore bear a huge responsibility, writes the conservative daily Rzeczpospolita: "After the tragic accident the Polish state is in a difficult position. Someone must fill in for the high officials who perished at the airfield in Smolensk. Responsibility lies with the ruling majority. Fate has determined that even before the presidential and parliamentary elections, further state functions have come under the political control of the Civic Platform. The politicians of the ruling party, especially parliamentary speaker Bronisław Komorowski, now have an enormous and unexpected responsibility. They must ensure that the state functions in an orderly way and that the most important offices can resume their duties. Nevertheless Komorowski and the Civic Platform must remember that they are taking over these duties under exceptional circumstances, not through a democratic vote but as a result of a dramatic accident."
