Mário Soares on mankind's responsibility for nature
Natural events like the volcano eruption in Iceland are proof of mankind's irresponsibility, Portugal's former head of state Mário Soares writes in the daily Diário de Notícias: "For those who, like myself, have been living for over eight decades without ever having experienced anything like this ... it makes sense to ask: Is not the irresponsible and clumsy hand of mankind partially to blame, which attacks planets and mistreats them, destroying their natural balance? ... The summit in Copenhagen ... was a failure. ... Scientists contradicted the prevailing theory among environmental activists, saying that global warming was not caused by humans. ... It was something natural, they said and repeated. So no one's responsible. To defend his immediate interests man's greed pushes him to go further without a bad conscience. ... I am entirely convinced that at the next environmental summit scientific truth will be restored and the great powers of the world will be forced to respect the rules that are aimed at radically reducing global warming."
