Medvedev makes progress in foreign policy

Russia marked the 65th anniversary of the victory over Hitler's Germany with a military parade on Sunday. For the first time Russian President Dmitry Medvedev also invited Nato soldiers to the celebrations. The daily Delo sees this as a sign of progress in Russia's foreign policy: "It marks a kind of turning point because up to now Russian foreign policy doctrine had been dictated by the fear of having Nato in Russia's own backyard. The condemnation of Stalin and Soviet totalitarianism, for which Medvedev received praise from US President Barack Obama, also points to change. ... Russia has made great progress in the past two years as far as relaxing the general climate is concerned. Although the few members of the Communist Party condemned the participation of the Nato soldiers, 55 percent of Russians reacted positively. Russia is taking a step forwards, but how fast this process will be also depends on foreign initiatives."
