Tusk deserves the Charlemagne Prize
Prime Minister Donald Tusk will receive the 2010 Charlemagne Prize on Thursday in recognition of his services on behalf of European integration. A plausible decision in the eyes of the conservative daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: "Since the first former communist countries joined the European Union the government in Warsaw has made the transition from problem case to one of the Union's cornerstones. While a growing number of old EU countries have seen their economies flounder Poland has become an island of stability - so much so that one may well ask whether the talk of the 'two lungs' isn't passé because the Western European lung is wheezing. ... Nonetheless Tusk may not yet have reached the highpoint of his career. Präsident Kaczyński ... relentlessly put the brakes on his passion for liberal reform. If following the early elections at the end of June Tusk's party colleague Komorowski takes the place of the late Kaczyński (which seems likely) the prime minister's power will further increase. Tusk will then be able to prove how serious he was about his promises of reform."
