Chief editor supports Kaczyński out of principle

Adam Michnik, chief editor of the liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza, has not only endorsed the candidacy of his favourite Bronisław Komorowski in the presidential elections with his signature but also the candidacy of the national conservative politician Jarosław Kaczyński. His explains his principles to readers who have harshly criticised this move: "I have been accused: 'This is betrayal. ... Such a change of heart can be expected of young careerists but not of people with principles'. I have been living too long ... not to have grown used to such accusations of betrayal. I heard them for the first time 45 years ago. Since then they have always accompanied me. Why did I sign the list for Kaczyński? Because Jarosław Kaczyński represents an important sector of the Polish public and has its support. And also because he has the right to run for office. That's all. These are my principles. And I make an effort to stay true to them - regardless of what my friends or those who support me think."
