Cameron launches underestimated government programme
The new British coalition government on Thursday began its work. The daily Die Presse draws attention to the new prime minister's socio-political programme: "David Cameron is frequently underestimated, with people calling him a shallow upstart. But the liberal Tory brings a philosophy to his post that could spread all the way to Europe. 'Big Society', he calls it. Cameron wants to hand the power of the state back to society. According to his model parents should join forces and organise schools for their children. The new prime minister hopes this community-based approach, which bears closest resemblance to that of the Greens, will bring not only more quality but also greater social cohesion. In Clegg [the leader of his liberal coalition partner] he has found a fellow campaigner. Together they want to revitalise the freedoms that were curbed in the name of the fight against terror."
