Hungary wants to "Orbánise" Slovakia

At its first session today, Friday, the new parliament in Budapest wants to offer Hungarian citizenship to members of the Hungarian minorities in neighbouring countries. Slovakia, home to roughly half a million Hungarians, has sharply protested. The liberal daily Sme comments on the plans of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban: "Pál Csáky [head of Slovakia's Party of the Hungarian Coalition, who [Prime Minister] Robert Fico has accused of reacting hysterically, forgot the most important thing - it was just a reaction. Viktor Orbán has been a politician for too long not to know how people will react to his initiative. Nine years ago when Orbán came forward with proposals for a citizenship law for Hungarians living outside the country and an annulment of the Beneš Decrees, the whole world witnessed his defeat at the hands of the Slovakian government."
