Czech parties ignore European policy
Parliamentary elections will take place in the Czech Republic this weekend. The business paper Hospodářské noviny writes that the parties failed to address key European policy issues in their campaigns: "It's as if we were living on a desert island. Do we even see what's going on in Europe? And if so, what is our position? ... The dramatic developments in Europe only make themselves felt with comparisons to Greece. While one party is 'taking us down the Greek path', the other maintains it is protecting us from just that. Yet it cannot be overlooked that Europe is facing institutional changes and new rules and regulations. ... These include the modernisation of the Stability Pact, 'economic government', stricter controls and coordination of monetary policy, and possibly even a new status for the European Central Bank. ... What is the Czech position on these issues? We don't have the foggiest idea. The parties are keeping mum on the whole thing."
