EU bank tax will reduce taxpayers' burden
The EU Commission wants banks to pay a tax which would ensure that they pay their share of the costs for the consequences of the financial crisis. The Polish daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna welcomes the proposal: "Now Brussels is finally coming back into play. The fund proposed by the European Commission to cover the banks' losses is a necessary and valiant step. In recent months Europe's financial institutes have done everything to ensure that the governments forget their obligations. And they continued doing business as usual. The new tax proposed by Brussels does not decouple the banks from the logic of maximising profits as quickly as possible. But there is at least a chance that those who engage in all too risky activities will have to pay for the consequences, rather than the taxpayers."
