New coalition can end political stalemate
A centre-right coalition can pave the way for pressing reforms, writes the conservative daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung in view of the success of the new parties in the Czech parliamentary elections: "The forthright and unconventional Prince Karel von Schwarzenberg has emerged as the clear victor. This is all the more surprising as he made no bones during the election campaign about the fact that the Czech Republic faces hard times and painful cuts. By contrast the Social Democrats promised the moon, leaving above all the younger voters cold. That is remarkable in itself. But the Civic Democratic Party, which has been compromised by corruption and scandals, also met with a crushing defeat. ... After the elections on Friday and Saturday the crippling stalemate in the country should now be overcome. If the three centre-right parties unite it will result in the first stable governing majority the country has seen in a long time. And that's just what the Czech Republic needs to implement the reforms that have been postponed for years."
