Oil disaster poses threat to Obama
Oil company BP's operation "Top Kill", with which it had hoped to stop the leak in the Gulf of Mexico, has failed. The disaster is causing huge damage to US President Barack Obama's political career, the left-liberal daily La Repubblica writes: "Panic is spreading like an oil stain across America and not even blameless President Barack Obama remains unaffected. Like the oil flowing from the leak the prestige of a politician who was elected to react more effectively to disasters than his incompetent jovial predecessor is ebbing away. The oil is killing not only fauna, flora and people who are dependent on the ecosystem but it could also be the end of the presidency and of a new hope. ... The great spill from the belly of the Gulf will not only foul the Earth for years to come but also erode the image of a president who has never been forgiven for becoming president."
