Sanctions hardly affect Iran

The UN Security Council has imposed a fourth round of sanctions against Iran in a bid to stop Tehran from producing nuclear fuel. The conservative daily Lidové noviny praises the large degree of support for the sanctions in the Security Council, but doubts the move will achieve much: "There are sufficient grounds for pessimism. If Tehran cared at all about UN resolutions it would have listened when the first resolution was passed in December 2006. While the new sanctions are even tougher, they fail to hit the truly sensitive areas of the Iranian economy. ... At least the Americans, British and French have been able to save face. The Russians and Chinese behaved for a moment like responsible superpowers - without jeopardising their trade interests. With their joint initiative [against the sanctions] - which in the end only aided Ahmadinejad - the Turks and Brazilians demonstrated their strength as regional powers. Almost everyone can be happy. And Tehran can happily go on enriching uranium."
