Polish government coalition collapses
On September 21 Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski announced the dismissal of Deputy Prime Minister Andrzej Lepper, the leader of the Samoobrona party (Self Defence). Lepper had threatened to refuse to approve the budget. The collapse of the governing coalition makes the prospect of new elections increasingly likely. Editor in chief Pawel Lisicki comments. "If there are new elections, Lepper's party won't be left in the lurch. Most polls show that Samoobrona has a solid base of support. On the other hand, Kaczynyki's PiS (Law and Justice Party) stands to lose most. Voters will judge it on its performance so far – and this doesn't look particularly impressive."
