Lithuanian president low on ideas
One year after taking office the Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė has taken stock of her presidency. Marius Laurinavicius writes in the daily Lietuvos Rytas that the president's message shows a lack of objectives: "I was really expecting she'd have come up with something new by now. Perhaps one should bear in mind the simple truth that in a democracy the president is the proverbial talent which one may invest to raise one's yield. And let it be said in passing that the president receives a pretty penny herself as salary, even in comparison with other states. For that reason the president must not only promise to lead the people to better times, but must also allow herself to be judged by the people for what she has achieved in her term in office. And that should happen not only happen after one year as president, but each and every day. For example now, where many in the country, politicians included, have no idea by what criteria the new attorney general was appointed, or why the president cancelled a meeting with US President Obama."
