Not over yet
Despite the victory of the speaker of parliament Bronisław Komorowski in the first round of the Polish presidential elections, his challenger Jarosław Kaczyński still has a chance in the run-off vote in two weeks' time, writes the liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza: "Komorowski's performance still doesn't mean a thing. Much will depend on whether his supporters and others who oppose a return to the IVth Republic [associated with the authoritarian state concept of the national conservative PiS] can be mobilised. The date of the second ballot set for the holiday season will work against the speaker, as will the fact that as a candidate he has lost the most ground to his opponents in the opinion polls. The good result achieved by [leftist candidate Grzegorz] Napieralski, who started the race with just three percent, is a protest against the conservative attitude of both major candidates. Napieralski dared to criticise the Church. His voters include the young people who remain unconvinced by Komorowski."
