Russia and Europe battle over gas

Europe's energy supplies are a central issue at the economic forum taking place in St. Petersburg. The daily Delo comments: "The Nord and South Stream gas projects are currently the most impressive symbols of cooperation in the energy sector. … With the gas pipelines Russia wants to overcome its dependence on transit countries like Ukraine and Belarus, with which Moscow is once again embroiled in a dispute over gas. This dispute has made Europe aware yet again that without new gas pipelines - whether Russian or the European-American Nabucco project - there will be no secure energy supply. Europe and Russia are fighting over gas supplies from the Caspian Basin and building new walls between them. Only when Europe no longer marginalises anyone, when it lifts the visa restrictions between Europe and Russia, will all the walls come down, said French President Sarkozy at the economic forum. Brussels and Moscow haven't made much progress in this area yet."
