Conservative parties boot out Social Democrats
Prague's newly elected parliament will sit for the first time today. The three conservative parties currently in the process of forming a coalition government want to name the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies. The communists will no longer hold the office of speaker, while the social democrats are to make do with the position of vice-speaker. The conservative daily Lidové noviny has mixed feelings: "It is good that after eight years the communists will no longer hold the office of speaker of parliament. ... But is it also good that it won't go to a social democrat? Let's not forget, formally at least the social democrats won the election. If we get a [Civic Democratic] ODS parliamentary speaker, then a party with just 20 percent of the vote will occupy the four highest posts. A respectable country with a generous leadership should allow itself the luxury of a member of the opposition as speaker of the house."
