Carinthian Slovenes gain self-confidence

The parent organisation of the Carinthian Slovenes in Austria has unanimously elected Valentin Inzko to be its new leader. The National Council of the Carinthian Slovenes has high expectations for the experienced Austrian diplomat, writes the daily Večer: "Inzko has already announced a change in the policy of the organisation. It is to become more self-assured, fight for justice and demand its due: additional bilingual place name signs, regulated financing for bilingual kindergartens and its own music school, the Slovenian language as an official language at state institutions and a uniform minority structure. ... The diplomat Inzko knows perfectly well that his demands won't fulfil themselves and that he needs Slovenia's support. Until then he will try to unite the divided minority. It is hoped Inzko will resolve ... the conflicts in an elegant and diplomatic manner."
