Budweiser must remain in Czech hands
The new Czech government is considering privatising and selling the country's last remaining state-owned brewery, Budweiser, in České Budějovice. The German-language weekly Prager Zeitung says this would be a very bad step: "Because of its history the brewery is a symbol for the Czechs, a sign of their emancipation and national identity comparable with the National Museum or the National Theatre, neither of which we would want to privatise. ... Even if the new investor made the beer according to the traditional method, it would still lose its soul. The best example of this is Pilsner Urquell, which today is not only brewed in the Czech Republic but also in Poland. A beer is more than just the sum of its contents."
