Berlusconi must face vote of confidence

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has tied the fate of his government to the outcome of a vote of confidence to be held in the coming weeks. He wants to put a five-point programme to the vote which among other things contains reforms in the areas of justice, finance and federalism. This is proof of Berlusconi's great worries, writes the daily Delo: "He is afraid that the judges will clip his wings even before he manages to move into the Quirinal Palace [the president's official residence]. In this case the planned purchase of MPs and senators from the other side in the next few weeks probably won't be enough. Berlusconi will trigger a real crisis, the fall of his own government and take sides against his only remaining allies, who depend on him - Umberto Bossi and his Lega Nord. And they are already looking for voters. Their calls for the expulsion of the Roma and all foreigners who don't have enough money or a decent home to live in don't bode well for this autumn."
