Futile mission in Afghanistan

One soldier has been killed and several severely wounded in an attack on a Hungarian convoy in Afghanistan. The left-liberal daily Népszabadság doubts that the West can win the war in Afghanistan: "If the West pulls out it will be abandoning all those Afghans who don't want to live in the Middle Ages to the arbitrary will of the Taliban. But if the Western armies remain the war will continue, because the ... ultra-conservative Afghan society does not tolerate the presence of foreign soldiers, even when they hold out a helping hand. That is clear to everyone who has been in Afghanistan, above all the British and the Russians, who still painfully remember their defeats there. US President Barack Obama and his team have decided to remain in Afghanistan for lack of a better strategy. They are fighting terrorism. They continue their senseless campaign with unrelenting anger, and the others tag along."
