Bratislava remains steadfast

The Slovakian business paper praises Slovakia's Prime Minister Iveta Radičová for defending in Berlin her refusal to aid Greece: "Radičová has resisted pressure from Germany and repeated that no means no. And she expressed her disapproval of EU Commissioner for Economic Affairs Olli Rehn, who had criticised us for lacking solidarity. Rhen's exaggerated criticism was an impertinent expression of arrogance. Slovakia has every right to decide for itself over possible bilateral aid to Greece. The EU was the first to show insufficient solidarity when it refused to give the Greeks a penny. Only when the time to pay up came did people suddenly start talking about solidarity. ... Slovakia's successful rebellion will no doubt make things more difficult for the leaders of the Eurozone. The Slovakian precedent will have unpleasant political consequences. But if the EU commission wants to give lessons on solidarity, it should start where the stench of hypocrisy is the strongest - in Brussels."
