New EU ambassadors without a message
EU Foreign Minister Catherine Ashton has unveiled a list of ambassadors for the new EU "Foreign Service" or European External Action Service. Given the current lack of content for a common EU foreign policy the daily Delo sees the appointment of EU ambassadors as premature: "There can be no doubt that both the euro and the Schengen zone have propelled the process of European integration forward in certain areas. But both projects were built on jointly approved, clear, binding and measurable criteria right from the outset. A common foreign policy, which must run much more smoothly, obviously can't be based on such bureaucratic mechanisms. This makes it all the more expedient and also logical for the EU member states to first of all try and define the key components of a common EU foreign policy before they send the EU ambassadors who are charged with representing that common policy abroad."
