Poles will pay dearly for electricity monopoly
At the behest of the Polish government Poland's state utility company PGE is to take over Polish energy producer Energa. Warsaw wants to push through the deal to fill the gaps in its budget without regard for taxpayers' wallets, admonishes Andrzej Godlewski in the conservative daily Polska: "'You can only find the correct news in the business section', Günter Grass used to say. ... It is indeed curious when one state enterprise takes over another and the revenues are booked as proceeds for the Treasury Ministry. As Grass was such an excellent political analyst he would certainly have concluded that the government is merely securing the means to fill the gaps in its budget. That comes as a surprise even to me, all the more so because the deal will create a giant that will dominate the Polish energy market. Might it not be the case that we will bear the costs for this financial transaction by paying higher energy bills?"
