Judges must be worhty of self-government

Romania's Supreme Magistrate's Council (CSM), which as a self-governing organ has the task of guaranteeing the independence of the country's judiciary, will be elected this autumn in two separate ballots. The judges must first prove they are worthy of self-government, writes Cristian Ghinea in the daily România Liberă: "The first CSM failed to do this. On the contrary, it left many thinking ... that the people in the system should be substituted before handing them self-government. ... Romania, Bulgaria and Slovakia became embroiled in one corruption and privileges scandal after another because the judges had the power, before anything changed. ... Should we now deprive the judges of their power again? I don't have the answer, but I expect those who vote in the second ballot - the judges themselves - to have it."
