Carla Bruni's secretive life
Carla Bruni-Sarkozy's two biographies Carla et les ambitieux and Une vie secrète have appeared almost simultaneously. They paint a rather unflattering picture of France's first lady, writes the conservative daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung: "The French were already aware from reports in the glossies that Carla Bruni was no saint. Less well known was the calculating way in which Bruni apparently pursued her career goals even as a teenager and went on to ensnare influential men later. Some of the revelations take on political dimensions in retrospect. When a few months ago rumours of extramarital affairs circulated in the press she denied having initiated a police investigation into who was the author of the calumny. In Carla et les ambitieux the journalist authors who are regulars at the presidential palace affirm that the French intelligence agency the DCRI carried out an investigation, saying that Bruni boasted that she had access to confidential documents resulting from the research."
