Why Luxembourg is discredited
French Prime Minister François Fillon has apologised to Luxembourg's Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker for the anti-Luxembourg statements of French Senator Philippe Marini, who had said in a radio interview that he'd prefer it if Luxembourg didn't exist at all. In its leading article the weekly magazine Le Jeudi looks at the reasons behind such attacks: "Whether they come from London, Berlin or Paris, attacks against Luxembourg have multiplied in recent months. Is this simply the big guy lording it over the little guy? Is it due to the weakness of Luxembourg's diplomacy, which can't make itself heard or understood? Or could it be that the doyen of the European Council [Juncker has been a member since 1995] has made too many enemies over time? Certainly a bit of all of the above, and above all a French policy that takes after its unabashed president and doesn't hesitate to lie or spout half-truths to avoid rubbing voters the wrong way. In other words what some would call populism."
