More protection against Catholic sexual ethics

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has ruled that the Catholic Church is not allowed to summarily dismiss an employee for having extra-marital affairs. The left-liberal daily is delighted that for once the Church is being told what to do: "The Catholic Church is fond of preaching about loving one's neighbours. Many saints have been canonised because they were models of charity. But this can't be said of the Church as an employer. Anyone who doesn't live a 'devout' life is dismissed and the Church defines who is 'devout' and who isn't. The Catholic nursery school teacher who divorces her husband isn't devout in the eyes of the Church. This means that employees at churches and religious institutions (teachers, doctors, carers) have lived in precarious employment conditions up to now. But this era of watered-down labour laws is drawing to a close. The court accepts the stringent rules of the Church only in the case of employees who are high representatives of their church. … The Church would do well to exercise tolerance, compassion and solidarity without having to be taught these virtues by a court."
