Stubborn and irresponsible
Israel is jeopardising the peace talks and affronting its closest allies with its stubborn attitude to construction in the settlements, writes the daily Die Presse: "It's not for nothing that ... the US, the Europeans and above all the Palestinians have been insisting that Israel should prolong the construction ban in the settlements. The refusal to do so on the part of Benjamin Netanyahu's government may be understandable from the point of view of Israeli domestic politics, but that doesn't make it a responsible decision. On the one hand because it endangers the continuation of the Middle East talks, and on the other hand because with another one of its now notorious 'diplomatic tours de force' Israel's current government is slapping its most important ally - the United States - in the face. However the US is just the ally that Jerusalem will need should Iran's nuclear programme come to present a major threat to Israel in the coming years."
