Fear of unemployment
The people of Europe are worried by the EU Commission's proposals on reforming the European Stability Pact, writes the daily Delo with an eye to the demonstrations in Brussels: "Above all among the unions the Commission meeting in Europe's capital has sparked fears that tightening the purse strings could increase unemployment in the EU. ... But the panic is exaggerated, as people say in the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). Instead of tightening their belts, they say, governments should do more to direct public spending into investment, youth employment, industrial strategies and the green economy. But for the masses who have gathered in Brussels to draw attention to the disadvantages of the employment policy and its dire social consequences the most recent measures certainly do not send a positive signal."
