Germany misunderstands multiculti

With an eye to the statements of German Chancellor Angela Merkel that multiculturalism has failed, the daily Le Temps examines the political concept of multiculturalism: "According to Merkel, 'multiculti' consists of 'living together and liking it'. This description may well correspond to the situation of foreigners in Germany, but not to the political project of multiculturalism. This is about giving public recognition to the cultural diversity of immigrants, but in the context of a common social project and in a spirit of respect for shared rules. ... Even if it has become a political hard-sell, multiculturalism ... continues to progress by means of the law and jurisprudence, which accord new liberties - such as ritual slaughter - in response to the European social reality which is becoming ever more culturally diverse."
