Pressure forces Merkel to act
German Chancellor Angela Merkel's energetic appearance at the EU summit in Brussels does not come out of the blue, writes the conservative daily Lidové noviny: "Pressure is mounting on Merkel at home. The increasingly sceptical German public expects her to guarantee that Germany will not have to pick up the bill indefinitely for over-indebted countries. That's why she once more put the Treaty of Lisbon on the table last week in pre-summit talks with the French president in Deauville. ... Berlin could step up the pressure even more and threaten to leave the Eurozone. For months now German business circles have been seriously studying the possibility of a common currency only for economically-responsible Northern European countries. ... But that sort of pressure would only contribute to the dissolution of Europe."
