Populism is short-lived
The defeat of Barack Obama is part of the United States' traditional political cycle, whereas the populist Tea Party movement responsible for the victory of the Republicans could turn out to be short lived, according to the left-liberal daily La Repubblica: "The Republicans should avoid becoming too euphoric about this victory. The Tea Party is certainly the big novelty of the moment. The movement has studied the "Obama model" to perfection, it has used the mobilisation of civil society to turn the party establishment upside down. It is an "insurgency" of a civil society that intends to win back its independence. Movements of this kind can soon run out of steam, however. ... From now on the economy will be the decisive issue. ... The right-wing populist Conservatives are dreaming of a lean state and drastic cuts in public spending. ... A doctrinaire vision that would exacerbate the crisis and plunge the United States into a new depression."
