Hope for Serbia and Croatia
On a historic visit to the eastern Croatian city of Vukovar on Thursday Serbian President Boris Tadić apologised for the massacre committed by Serbian troops there 19 years ago. The Slovenian daily Delo sees this as a positive sign: "Even if many will insist that Tadić's statement doesn't do enough to alleviate the enormous pain felt by the people of Vukovar, Serbia's president has nevertheless taken an important step towards normalising relations between the two countries. ... Tadić's alliance of reconciliation with his Croatian counterpart Ivo Josipović, who is willing to admit crimes committed on the Croatian side, awakens the hope that this is not just a passing episode and that the policy of peace and cooperation will be continued. ... Certainly, this step is not going to dispel the consequences of the war like the wave of a magic wand, but it will make it easier for the two presidents to achieve their desired goals."
