China's power a threat to democracies

The New York magazine Forbes placed Chinese leader Hu Jintao at the top of its list of the most powerful people in the world last week, demoting US President Barack Obama to second place. The Romanian daily Adevărul sees this as a worrying development: "After the collapse of communism the free market, democracy and human rights seemed to be the only path to prosperity. Has this era come to an end? ... Today the European leaders discuss money and investments with China rather than jailed dissidents or Internet censorship. Is a coexistence based on such common interests possible between the free world and the land of the most powerful man on Earth? Can we change China with money and goods rather than political values? One thing is clear: the era of expanding democracies seems to have ended or a least be taking a long break. But at least in our own countries we should defend democratic values."
