Quality is possible on Italian television

Around eight million viewers watched the political talk show Vieni via con me (come with me) presented by Roberto Saviano on Italian public broadcaster RAI on Monday. The programme's viewing figures of over 24 percent are proof that Italian viewers appreciate quality television, writes the left-liberal daily La Repubblica: "This success makes it clear that in our country a different kind of television is possible, even though we are TV addicts, hypnotised and lulled by commercial channels. Public television makes sense as long as it fulfils the institutional function which gives it the right to exist. This doesn't mean simply broadcasting a 'leftist', alternative or oppositional programme, but ensuring intelligent, committed, responsible and at the same time entertaining television."
