Aung San Suu Kyi's release strategic move
The regime in Myanmar on Saturday freed the opposition politician and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi after 15 years of house arrest. The business paper Hospodářské noviny suspects the junta's decision was driven by political considerations: "The main concern of the generals who have ruled the country for 50 years is an end to the unpleasant foreign sanctions. Pressure from abroad played a key role in the release. This is a victory for that part of the international community that cares about human rights. However when they released the rebellious dissident the generals were also thinking of the situation within the country. The junta wants to test whether the opposition is strong and whether it can manage to divide it into those who play along with the new parliament's game and those who could potentially be isolated. But this game of poker is an unequal contest, for the generals can imprison the freshly released dissident whenever they want."
