World Bank lambastes Romania's budgetary policy

In a recent report the World Bank has delivered a devastating judgement on the budgetary policy of the Romanian government, saying the budget is based on rudimentary estimates and the state apparatus is hugely oversized. These are well-known facts, the daily Adevărul writes, but the report does propose solutions: "For example the Romanian economy cannot compare either in terms of size or development with the UK, French or German economies. But our finance ministry has several hundred more employees than the ministries of these countries. And that's not half of it! If we compare our tax revenues with theirs we really get a shock. ... The World Bank report suggest in addition to rationalisation a 'reorganisation of human resources according to strategic priorities'. The most important 'strategic priorities' appear to be to fight the extremely low tax revenues and the high level of tax evasion they reflect."
