Local elections fail to change Poland

The liberal-conservative ruling party PO achieved a majority in the local elections on Sunday but wasn't able to give the national-conservative opposition party PiS a sound beating. So the elections haven't really changed anything, the conservative daily Rzeczpospolita concludes: "The candidates of the parties have not been replaced, nor has the party of [Prime Minister] Donald Tusk scored a triumphal victory and nor has the group around [PiS leader] Jarosław Kaczyński suffered a spectacular defeat. The PO continues to be very strong, however the PiS remains pretty much where it was and has not been pushed to the fringes. And the results of the [leftist] SLD and the [Peasants' party] PSL weren't bad either. Nor has anything changed regarding the Poles' attitude to the local authorities. As always, the elections have failed to arouse any strong emotions. The voter turnout was unfortunately relatively low - as usual."
