France remains mum during crisis
This week Chancellor Angela Merkel again suggested that private banks participate in the European rescue package, prompting a hefty debate across Europe. The business paper Les Echos criticizes what it considers France's passive stance on the matter: "The paradox is that Angela Merkel has something to say about this every day. Paris, for its part, is completely mum. As in the springtime during the crisis in Greece, Nicolas Sarkozy prefers to remain inconspicuous. [French Prime Minister] François Fillon said only a few words ... on the matter. ... It is often suggested that we should not embarrass our main partners with explanations. The most important thing is that Germany continues to have faith in the euro and demonstrates this through its readiness to pay and its increasing readiness to cooperate. Europe's two most important politicians have ... made their common position clear. … But this is too little for such a difficult crisis."
